Song Selection

This is the song I have chosen to do my project on, I plan to create a different video to James Bay and make it narrative, linking to the lyrics.

Weekly Log

This week I have been creating my story board and drawing pictures of what I plan to do. I have decided to shoot my video at Berry Head, the beach and at home, I plan to tell a story within my video of a couple breaking up and getting on with their lives (mirroring the lyrics of the song).

Media Copy Right Email

Dear sir/madam

I am currently an A Level Media Studies student and for my A2 Project I will be creating a music video, I have chosen James Bay 'Let It Go' and I am writing to ask for permission to use this song for this project. The music video will be shown to the class and teacher and will also be uploaded on to Blogger.co.ukfor the OCR Examiner to see.

The song would only be used for educational purposes and it would not be released to a large audience or uploaded to any public video websites.

If I do not hear back from you I will assume that the copyright permission has been granted and I can use 'Let It Go' by James Bay for my A2 Media Project.

Yours sincerely,

Rachel Marwood,

Brixham College Sixth Form

Music Video Analysis - Boom Clap

Charli Xcx - Boom Clap

The music video for Boom Clap by Charli Xcx is focused around The Fault In Our Stars movie and features extracts from the film. The video goes along with Goodwin's Theory as the video is generally vogue, featuring close ups of the artists as a central attraction for the audience, to feel more involved with the artist and to make the video seem more realistix. The video includes clips from the film (intertexuality) and this song features in the film itself.
The setting of the video is in Amsterdam, where The Fault In Our Stars was filmed, this again links to the film, the first shot we get is an establishing shot to immediately show the location of the video.
The lyrics to the video, in a way, represent illustration as the lyrics are about a love story, "boom clap the sound of my heart" which represents the film story line of Augustus and Hazel's love story. As the video mainly focuses around the film this makes the video illustrative.

The music genre of this video is Pop and this is portrayed through the mise en scene - such as the clothes they wear and the colours of the surroundings. The location of the video being in the middle of a major city also adds to the pop idea of the video.
This video also uses voyeurism in the clips from the film, to present the 'sex appeal'. This goes with Goodwin's theory of "Exhibitionism" - the extravagant behavior to draw attention to them

There are clear links between the video by Charli Xcx and the film as some of the scenes shown in the video are reflected by Charli, for example when Charli is shown in the boat, it is mirrored by the characters of the film, showing a clear link between the two, along  with the fact that the locations are exactly the same.

The target audience for this video is mainly teenager girls as the artist Charli Xcx is 22 years old and the actors are both young as well. This is deliberate to represent the genre of Pop, as Pop is stereo typically listened to by teenagers. The video is targeted to girls more than boys as the film itself is considered a "chick flick" which girls tend to enjoy more than boys. Again this is a clear link between the Video and the Film, which ultimately promotes the Film.

Music Video Analysis - Billie Jean

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean

The music video for Michael Jackson's Billie Jean is a narrative based video as the whole video tells a story and the lyrics are illustrative as we hear the lyrics "Billie Jean" as this is printed on a news paper in the video, which shows that the lyrics match what is happening in the video. The story in the lyrics involves a girl named Billie Jean who is lying saying that Michael Jackson is the father of her child, this is similar to the video as a man is seen to be stalking Michael Jackson and trying to set him up, even though he is innocent, much like the Billie Jean case. This is where the song could be seen as amplification as there is a twist to the lyrics as the story is similar but not the same.

The song is a Pop/R&B song and this is represented well, the pop is represented by the dancing and performance and how the song is up beat. However there are no bright colours used like a normal pop video, making it R&B as well.

The notion of looking is used as Michael Jackson himself looks at the camera and makes a connection with the audience, making it more realistic and keep the audience entertained throughout.
Iconography is used as Michael Jackson does his iconic dance move throughout, this dance move features in the majority of his music videos and is continued to be used in this video. This pleases the audience as his famous move is involved, this represents the artist.

The video is very much performance based as the camera follows Michael Jackson dancing and singing, this again follows the Iconography idea, as Michael Jackson is always seen to be dancing, the video would not be right without dancing from Michael Jackson.
